Hey, Broadway Baby!
In this brand new, one-hour class for mommy (or daddy, grandma or caregiver!) and baby, our youngest students will be exposed to basic movement and musical patterns proven to stimulate brain development and encourage self-expression. A highly-structured curriculum that will utilize theatre as a platform for early-childhood development will include hands-on activities and group exercises that will make these little stars shine. The fun atmosphere will also allow parents a chance to get to know each other and make new friends! This class meets for an hour, once a week for 8 weeks.

PRESCHOOL PLAYERS

Let’s get movin’!
In this one-hour class that meets once a week for 8 weeks, preschoolers will discover the magic of storytelling by using their “instruments” – body and voice – for creative, dramatic self-expression. Curriculum includes basic movement and ‘dance’ technique that will challenge these young students in a fun and interactive setting. Children will leave the class with a new sense of self and the world around them.

IMAGINATION EXPRESS
• 1 hr. class – 8 sessions (limit 10)

Once upon a time…!
Utilizing elements from all the artistic disciplines (music, visual art, literature, etc…), children explore the structure of a story, develop a deeper awareness of self through traditional acting exercises for youth and discover new ways to express creative ideas and use their imaginations. Ultimately, listening skills develop and natural instincts emerge allowing everyone to flourish and have fun in a unique environment that simultaneously promotes social interaction and individual expression. This class meets for an hour, once a week for 8 weeks.

DISCOVERY: GRADES 1-9

ACTING I

Create! Challenge! Become!
This introductory acting class is designed for the beginning student. Curriculum at this level encourages creative thinking and challenges students to start to look from the outside in as they examine the various aspects of performing. Incorporating improvisation, terminology and some basic script analysis, students will start to develop their voice, body and mind as they pursue goals, create characters and scenes, and work as an ensemble. This class meets for an hour and a half, once a week for 8 weeks.

This class for more experienced young performers provides a challenging and nurturing environment where teamwork is integral. Students will learn advanced exercises that will continue to develop voice and movement techniques while also working on intermediate-level script and character analysis. Student interaction is encouraged with an emphasis on collaboration making for a more enriching classroom experience. This class meets for an hour and a half, once a week for 8 weeks.

Engage! React! Refine!
This class is designed to build on previous classroom or performing experience. Working in the larger and technically outfitted Rehearsal Hall, students review and strengthen basic skills and learn how to explore and analyze the content of a script, ultimately understanding how to rehearse and present scenes and monologues. Through structured exercises in adaptation and performance of dramatic literature, students examine point-of-view to discover how plays come to life. This class meets for an hour and a half, once a week for 8 weeks.

Turn on that spotlight!
This Musical Theatre class for beginners will break down the basics of this highly collaborative art form and give students the room they need to grow. Whether you’ve been in a show or just danced around the living room with a pretend microphone in your hand, this class will begin to refine skills and develop the discipline necessary to become a triple-threat! Singing, acting and dancing will be explored in a nurturing setting. This class meets for an hour, once a week for 8 weeks.

This dynamic, advanced workshop will take things to the next level by focusing on two things: further exposing students to the various styles of music, dance, and acting that are employed in the musical theatre and preparing students to audition and perform in a musical. Additionally, smaller class sizes allow for more individualized coaching. This class meets for an hour and a half, once a week for 8 weeks.

The ultimate Musical Theatre class!
Continuing this long-running and exciting tradition, this program (unique to the city) bumps everything up a notch and gives students the opportunity to experience the creation of an original script while working up several numbers from the musical theatre canon. Emphasis is on collaboration and discipline as these 10 sessions of fun and hard work culminate in a special presentation on the Tarkington Theatre stage! Curriculum includes study in Acting (character development, techniques for interpreting a song, etc.), Music (vocal performance technique, mechanics of breathing, how to read a score, music vocabulary, etc.), and Dance (terminology, musical theatre dance styles – jazz, ballet, tap, modern, how to prepare for performance, etc.). In addition to performance, students will learn some history of the American musical theatre and how this popular art form has changed and developed over several decades.

MUSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
(Performance experience required. Students may be asked to submit a résumé.)

Sharpen your skills!
This workshop for the dedicated high school student offers the opportunity to work with local professionals in a master class setting. Instead of a broad overview of material, class time will be devoted to learning two or three challenging numbers from the musical theatre canon and will feature highly-focused work on technique, interpretation and execution in singing, acting and dance; the perfect place to hone your skills and get ready for the next big school musical or college auditions. This class meets for two hours, once a week for 8 weeks.

JR. CIVIC ON DEMAND 

Having trouble fitting one of our regularly scheduled classes into your hectic schedule? We can help! If you have a group of 6-10 young people interested in taking one of the applicable classes (listed below), we will tailor a regular 8-week or 4-week Intensive class session to accommodate you. You provide us with the dates and times that are convenient for your group and we will provide the space and an instructor.

Additionally, as part of our Community Outreach program DramaWorks, we are able to offer ON-DEMAND programming to local community service organizations serving children who may not otherwise have access to our programming. As with any On-Demand class, each group must have 6-10 students and existing curriculum from our Jr. Civic classes must be used. For these groups, we will gladly supply an instructor in our own space or send an instructor directly to your community center or school.

Each class can run on an 8-week schedule (once a week for 8 weeks) or as an Intensive 4-week schedule (twice a week for 4 weeks).

On-Demand classes
• Regular class fee + additional $10 convenience fee per student
• One-time $50 administrative fee

On-Demand for Community Service Groups
• Flat fee of $100 per student
• One-time $50 administrative fee
